Dear Emma,
I’m writing this while watching my grandchildren make sandcastles.
The sun and the salt of the ocean remind me of him. It reminded me of you,
also. You’re probably wondering why I’m contacting you after all these years. I
ask myself the same question. I thought it was time you knew the truth,
especially you, dear friend...
I wanted to tell you all those years ago, and while you read
this, you will find out why I didn’t. My
troubled heart hopes you will believe what I should have told you then. Don’t
hate me for not telling you, Emma; I had very good reason not to. When I look
at my grandson as he plays, the eyes staring back at me were his eyes. I know
now more than ever that it wasn’t a dream. Now, you will know the truth. And in
time, everyone will. Please have an open mind while reading my journal and
understand why I couldn’t tell you. It began the day of my mother’s
funeral. You remember that awful day. You were there with me.
