“In this richly imagined start to a new sci-fi series, Reed brings optimism to the goal of solving entrenched violence in a galaxy far, far away . . . A propulsive, sharply crafted tale about a planetary war.” -Kirkus Reviews
Breaker’s home is cleaved by blood. The three tribes on the planet Scarlatti, whose only difference is their blood color, each want to exploit Breaker’s valley for themselves. The feudal tension has already claimed red-blood Breaker’s leg and his older brother. Now all this 18-year old wants is to maintain the tenuous peace in order to keep his little ‘stroid of a brother alive. Malani, a red-blood raised blue, is a kidnapped POW and only wants to return to her adoptive home with her dangerous blue secrets. Luka, a red-blood stewing for trouble, wants to right wrongs done to his family and bath his home in justice.
All three intersect when Breaker discovers a wrecked starship and is given seven days by the green-bloods to fix and hand it over as a weapon. Breaker must decide if aiding his enemies is worth the home he knows and his family’s life. War is coming. And war respects no boundaries. And war leaves no survivors.
If I were trapped on an island, I’m bringing the Survival
Dream Team. We will have matching badass outfits and uber cool boots that can
squash our enemies. Then we will pick our teeth with their bones. I will
survive forever with these three gals on my team:
If the island has a forest, she’ll know how to navigate it. She
can make her own weapons pretty easily yet won’t put herself in unnecessary
risk. You need to be able to count on your team member like that. Also, we will
be less likely to waste ammunition if she takes over the hunting.
Second: Lara Croft
If our island turns out to be haunted or something, I want her on my team.
Plus, between Lara and Katniss, I’m guaranteed to have a mini army behind my
back. Her foraging skills will be helpful in gaining supplies and her navigational
skills will also come in handy while we try to escape. Bonus: she’s uber
educated. I have a feeling the long hours of boredom will pass whenever she’s
sharing what she knows. Her willingness to take high-risks might pay off well
too.
Third: Clarke from The 100
We need somebody with the ability to lead the alphas. Clarke
is really good at figuring out people and getting them to work together. We
need that leadership skill. Her temperament will even out Lara and Katniss’s.
She also has the ability to see the big picture, beyond surviving the next
moment or taking the biggest risk. We need someone who can think and see long
term like this.
And me: So yeah. Despite
cannibals, monsters, shipwrecks, supernatural elements, hostile
