We write to music, so
each of our characters had his/her own sound track. As we built characters, we
gave them each a playlist and a genre of music they preferred. This helped us
with building their motivations, flaws and overall arcs. It’s a trick which was passed down to
us and we recommend it. A lot of actors do this when they get a complex
role...they will create a soundtrack specifically for that character. Here are
our character playlists
Keeva:
Strong Femme: (we couldn’t confine her to one genre) Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor
Swift, Lorde, Liz Phair, The Breeders, The Distillers, L7, Bishop, Pink, M.I.A.
Amy Winehouse, Madonna, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin
Kai:
Hip Hop: Drake, Lil Wayne,
Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Eminem, T.I., Notorious B.I.G.
Calix: Early Punk:
The Ramones, New York Dolls, Sonic Youth, The Clash, The Velvet Underground
Sobek: Pagan Metal: Ensiferum, Graveland,
Eluveitie, Obtest, Primordial, Skyclad, Enslaved, Amorphis
Taj: Jazz: Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Big Joe Duskin, Esther
Phillips, BB King, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Blanton, Benny Goodman
The Ilex Sisters: Showtunes: Hamilton,
Rent, Next to Normal, Les Miserables, Hair, Serial Killer Barbie, Wicked, Mamma
Mia! Avenue Q, Caberet
Inelia: New Wave: Morrissey, Duran Duran, Cyndi
Lauper, Devo, The Pretenders, The Cars
Blue: Alternative Rock: Lou Reed, Sex Pistols,
Violent Femmes, Sound Garden, The Cure
Genesis: Latin Alternative: Molotov,
El Gran Silencio, Café
Tacuba,
Ska-P, Curanderos, La Vida Boheme
Lachlan:
Classic Rock: Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Creedance,
Clearwater Revival, Rolling Stones
We both love music and
probably had just as much fun putting together the character playlists as we
did the actual characters.
