On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.
In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.
Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.
Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

Brooke's Review:
Ok, so now I know why I don't do previews! What started off slow for me has turned into a need to know what happens! I need the rest now.
So, because this was only a preview, it's really hard for me to review it. I'll say these things about it:
1) Started off a bit slow for me and there were a lot of names that got a little confusing.
2) The characters were elusive, at first, and then BAM, I began to understand their complexities. Each has their own unique personality and I enjoyed getting to know them.
2) Took off and I started to understand all the names and places. And then I started to like even the "bad guy" and thought to myself, "Oh no, not the bad guy!" I know I need more of him SOON!
3) Ended on a note where I said, "I NEED MORE NOW!" And this is why I don't do previews! Because now I'm stuck waiting for the rest of this book! This makes me happy I waited a bit to read the preview. Now I only have a short time to wait before I can see what all the hub bub is about!
I can see why this is a highly anticipated book for 2016. At BEA people were crazy getting to the booth to get a copy of this one. I really wanted it, but I had other obligations. So I will be the one stalking the book stores on the day it comes out because I can't just leave off where the preview was and not have more!
When I get to read the rest of the book, I'll put up my full review! Thanks Tor Teen for providing me with this snippet that left me drooling for more!
Susan Dennard has come a long way from small-town Georgia. With a masters degree in marine biology, she got to travel the world—six out of seven continents, to be exact (she’ll get to Asia one of these days!)—before she settled down as a full-time novelist and writing instructor.
She is the author of the Something Strange and Deadly series (from HarperTeen) as well as the forthcoming Witchlands Series (Tor, 2015). When not writing, she can be found hiking with her dogs, exploring tidal pools, or earning bruises at the dojo.
You can learn more about Susan on her website, blog, newsletter, Twitter, or Pinterest.
I tried to get a copy of this at Comic Con but I didn't get in line quick enough. I totally understand what you mean about previews, they are just awful, especially when the book is so good!
ReplyDeleteI wanted it when I was at BEA but people were INSANE to get to it. I never would have made it. Plus I had another obligation, so I would have missed it anyway. Thanks for stopping by!
