SYNOPSIS:
When seventeen-year-old
Lucas Marshall tests positive for the M0A1 gene—a genetic abnormality believed
to predispose humans toward violence—he is shipped off to an impregnable
government facility to undergo a battery of psychological tests aimed at making
him crack. Now, having survived their tests and proven his mental stability,
Lucas is labeled safe to return home.
But any hope Lucas has of returning to a normal life is shattered when the van transporting him to the reintegration facility is forced off the road by a group of radicals intent on accessing the facility and exposing its dehumanizing practices. And Lucas is their ticket through the front door.
Spurred by rumors that the facility is secretly holding one of his old friends captive, Lucas and his bunk mate, Chris, agree to infiltrate the testing facility’s inner sanctum. Once inside, Lucas’s carefully laid plans begin to unravel and he's forced to seek help from those still locked within the facility’s concrete walls. But when every genetic test claims your only allies are hardwired to become the next Charles Manson, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Available at: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, IndieBound, Books a Million, The Book Depository, and Powell’s
1.
A
magazine, a piece of paper, a cotton ball or any other crumpable product you
can easily fashion into homemade earplugs. Without it, you won’t survive the annoying
buzz jolting you awake every thirteen minutes and seven seconds.
2.
Socks and
loads of them. Not only will they keep your toes toasty warm on your twenty
mile hike back to the testing facility, but they are perfect for hiding
contraband thumb drives.
3.
A
flashlight…or seven. The generators and the lights work just fine in the
facility, so long as someone isn’t purposefully smashing the bulbs. Once they go out… well, best of luck
navigating that concrete maze
4.
Bunkbeds.
And trust me, you’re going to want to call dibs on the bottom bunk. Nothing better than a mattress and a
sleeping roommate above your head to block out the strobe lights.
5.
A strong
sense of loyalty. People aren’t always who they appear to be. Trust your
instincts and stay true to those who you know have your back!
6.
It A
diary, preferably one written by a former resident of IGT’s testing facility
(aka your brother) The insight he can give you, the mind-tricks he has mastered,
may very well safe your sanity.
7.
Shoes, especially
if you get locked in the staff room “for your own protection.” Glass has a
nasty way of slicing up your feet.
8.
Playing
cards. You will spend at least twelve-hours sitting with your back to a
concrete wall, staring at the other teens unlucky enough to have tested
positive for the MAOA-L gene. A good
game of poker would surely help to pass the time.
9.
Your
golden ticket to early release: a key with the number 9 engraved on it. That
tiny silver key literally stands between you and freedom.
10. And most importantly: hope.
Hope and a belief that you are more than the sum of your genes.
