Brooke's Review:
I want to thank Avon Impulse for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way impacted my opinion or review.
I really love Megan Ericsson's writing. Her Bowler series pulled me right in and I knew she would become a go to author for me. So when she started Mechanics of Love, I was super excited to read the spin off. I really enjoyed Dirty Thoughts so much, and I was excited when I learned she would write Brent's story.
From the start of this book I fell for Brent. He's super rough around the edges, but has such a big heart to him. You can see he struggles with intimacy and opening up so people can see the real him. Instead, he chooses to let people think he's this laid back, I don't care about much, I'm not so smart guy. The reality is he's so much more. And what better way for this "other" Brent to be pulled out of him then to introduce a girl who has sworn off men for good?
Ivy comes to town with her sister, Alex, to make a fresh start. Alex works as a mechanic in Brent's family's mechanic business. You could not find two more different sisters who truly love each other and would do anything for one another. And that's what Ivy does. She follows Alex out of a bad situation and plants herself firmly in a town where each woman thinks their problems are solved. And Ivy has no intention of doing anything other than raising her daughter and getting a good job to help support her family. So Brent and her attraction to him takes her by surprise. I will say I found Ivy to be my least favorite of the women in this series so far. That's not to say I didn't like her, I just didn't feel the pull to her as I did for Jenna. And now Alex, who I totally love.
This story is about sacrifice: Ivy and Alex giving up everything they know to make a fresh start. It's about family: Ivy knowing that Alex will always be there for her as she will for Alex. It's about loyalty: taking the side you know is right for someone else, even if it's not right for you. And, ultimately, finding love and making it work.
Brent grows so much during this story. He comes out of this shell he's kept himself in for so long. He goes from the guy with the manwhore reputation to one who would give up everything and open his heart to allow the right woman in. Ivy has a similar growth. She's closed up, making sure no one gets past the wall she's built. But she slowly comes to realize that not all people are bad, and the good ones are worth the fight.
Once again Megan has captured my heart with her story. This is my favorite book by her thus far. I love all her characters, even the background ones who seem like there's not much they can contribute and then, WHAM, they hit you with all they've got. I can't wait to see what's in store for us with Dirty Deeds!
Megan Erickson grew up in a family that averages 5’5” on a good day and
started writing to create characters who could reach the top kitchen shelf.
She’s got a couple of tattoos, has a thing for gladiators and has been called a crazy cat lady. After working as a journalist for years, she decided she liked creating her own endings better and switched back to fiction.
She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. And no, she still can’t reach the stupid top shelf.
