If she were a verb,
it would be “bloom.”
That’s how she feels
when she enters my bloodstream. Like she’s blossoming outward through my veins,
petals raining from the sky like some kind of doped-up flower girl in a wedding
held just for me and my fix.
I don’t usually call
her by her given name, but when I do, I always add the “e” at the end.
Heroine.
My savior.
Tonight, she’s in my
pocket as I’m shuffling along the pavement, my Chucks scraping each crack in
the sidewalk like there’s nothing I want more than to break my mother’s back.
It’s not really that—I just don’t think I can lift my legs any higher. Once I
get back to my room, I’ll try to take my time. I’ll try to enjoy setting up my
rig, cooking the dope, drawing its juices up into the syringe. I’ll try not to
rush the process, my heart in my throat, my pulse racing like I’m about to
discover first love or the New World.
Kelly Fiore has a BA in English from Salisbury University and an MFA in Poetry from
West Virginia University. She received an Individual Artist Award from the
Maryland State Arts Council in 2005 and 2009. Kelly’s poetry has appeared in
Small Spiral Notebook, Samzidada, Mid Atlantic Review, Connotation Press, and
the Grolier Annual Review. Her books include Taste Test and Just
Like the Movies both from Bloomsbury USA and the forthcoming Thicker
Than Water from HarperTeen in 2016.
