Benson High School, home of the boring Bobcats.
This week was spirit week. Banners were hung all over the two story building.
Go old blue and red, woo to the freaking hoo. While the rest of her classmates
were busy littering the halls with their rousing chatter, Abby would rather
squeeze herself inside her locker. Spirit week was also prankster week,
something which seemed to give others free license to target her more than usual.
As she entered the front door, Abby was relieved when her regular tormentors
were nowhere in sight. She walked to her locker and quickly turned the lock,
hoping for once she would get the combination right on the first try. No such
luck. She passed the third number, just as always, and pounded the door in
frustration. It rattled against the abuse. “Crap!”
“Language,
Marcelli.”
Abby turned to face her homeroom teacher and
clenched her fists at her side. “Sorry,
Mrs. Black.”
“Who pissed in her cornflakes?” The
whispered words were lost on everyone, but her.
Abby took a deep breath and spun her lock again as
she ignored the invisible visitor. Focusing her attention on retrieving her
books, Abby pulled them out one at a time. When a chilling puff of air brushed
against her cheek, she backed away from it. Slamming her locker shut, Abby
walked away from it and headed in the direction of her homeroom.
“You can only ignore me
for so long. And I have forever, apparently.” There it was again. She refused to face
the source; instead she chose to grip her books closer to her body. Eventually,
the encounter would fade, and she'd be able to go about her day. This was
basically the drill each day. Arrive at school, avoid the voices seeking her
out relentlessly, and try not to let anyone catch on to it.
Again it called out to her. “I can do
this all day long.”
“Shut
it!” She
turned to the sound and wasn't surprised to see nothing there.
“Look,
she's talking to her 'friends' again. Is it the Tooth Fairy or a unicorn this
time, Marcelli?”
“Leave
me alone, Meghan.” Great.
This was sure to be an unpleasant morning from here on out. Who called in the
brat pack? The 'brat pack' consisted of Meghan Johnson, Lauren Thompson, and
Kristen Lewis.
“Or
what? You'll sick your imaginary friend on me?” The short blond toyed with a curl as
she shook her head at Abby.
“She's
such a freak.” Kristen,
Meghan's shadow joined in without losing a beat. The brunette's high pony tail
bobbed annoyingly behind her.
A chorus of 'freak,' and 'crazy' broke out around
her, as Abby tried to rush past them. The same thing happened every day. If she
wasn't so exhausted, she would be better equipped to deal with her peers. The
whole school found her oddities to be akin to a daily soap opera or worse, the
local train wreck. Her dilemma was so bad that keeping any friends had been
near impossible, since being affiliated with her made any potential friend a
social pariah. So rather than even bother with any kind of friendship circle,
Abby focused her attention on her studies. Very rarely, did she volunteer to
speak in class, so as not to draw attention to herself. She wasn't a straight A
student, because if she were, the teachers would demand she show her academic
prowess on a daily basis. Towing the line with a grade point average which put
her low on the honor roll had been the only thing helping her.
“Quick,
grab her.”
Abby attempted to dodge the three girls who
surrounded her, but to no avail. As they backed her up against the wall Abby
protested adamantly, but Lauren put her hand over her mouth. She did the only
thing she could think of. Abby opened her mouth, stuck out her tongue, and
licked Lauren's hand.
The redhead jerked her hand away and shrieked. “Gross.”
As Abby prepared to call for help, a hiss sounded
and a cloud of red started to filter its way toward her. She coughed as paint
fumes reached her nostrils. Shutting her eyes, she held up her hands to protect
her face. Abby struggled to twist away from the girls who were holding her, but
she couldn't break free. When it was over, she dropped to the ground and lay
huddled there on the floor. Angry tears flooded her eyes as the others
snickered and walked away with Meghan's parting shot, “Freak.”
About the Author
Author
Emma Bloom, that’s me! I was born in southern Illinois and am the youngest
in my family. From an early age I found a great love for reading and
dreamed of one day creating books that would capture the minds of young
readers. I am an avid lover of all things paranormal, even though I admit I’m
the first to duck and cover in a haunted house.
