ARC Review: The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand @harperteen @CynthiaHand

Last Time We Say Goodbye, The photo 17285330_zpseb70c7be.jpgThere's death all around us.
We just don't pay attention.
Until we do.

The last time Lex was happy, it was before. When she had a family that was whole. A boyfriend she loved. Friends who didn't look at her like she might break down at any moment.

Now she's just the girl whose brother killed himself. And it feels like that's all she'll ever be.

As Lex starts to put her life back together, she tries to block out what happened the night Tyler died. But there's a secret she hasn't told anyone-a text Tyler sent, that could have changed everything.

Lex's brother is gone. But Lex is about to discover that a ghost doesn't have to be real to keep you from moving on.

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand, The Last Time We Say Goodbye is a gorgeous and heart-wrenching story of love, loss, and letting go.

Brooke's Review:
I want to thank Harper Teen for providing me with an early copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

I only know Cynthia Hand from her angel trilogy, which I really enjoyed. So when I heard she was writing something contemporary, I was a bit skeptical. I know it can sometimes be really hard for authors to change genres. But there was absolutely nothing disappointing in this book at all and my doubt was quickly laid to rest.

Lex is mourning the loss of her brother Tyler. He chose to commit suicide just seven months ago. During her process of grief, she has pulled away from her friends, choosing to hide her heartache from the world. She attends counseling and school, but has given up on her activities, her social life, and just living how she did in general. Now in the midst of her darkness, she feels and sees her brother more than ever before. And she holds a deep secret, one that she believes could have saved Tyler from what he chose to do.

I really enjoyed Lex's character so much in this book. At times she was frustrating and pig headed, at other times she opened up on the page and you could see straight through to her soul. She's very analytical, a math genius who thinks of things as very concrete. I loved her process of healing. How she learned that things were not quite how she saw them and that her brother was not quite who she thought he was. And we watch as Lex goes through the stages of mourning and how she comes to accept that while her life may never be the same because her brother is gone, that doesn't mean that her connection with him is lost.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the dream sequences where Lex and Tyler interact. Because we never get to actually meet Tyler, we rely heavily on Lex's flashbacks of who he was. But the dreams really give a deeper meaning to Lex's loss and show the reader the bond that existed between these siblings.

I will say it was hard for me to read a lot of this. Knowing the pain Lex must have been feeling and watching as she wrestled with a guilt that ate away at her daily. Even when her friends try to get her to open up, she turns away and has excuses.

There is a bit of romance in this book, but it certainly is not the center of what's going on. It did, however, show us how important friendship and forgiveness is. And how important it is not to bottle all those feelings up inside, but to let them out.

Many of the chapters begin with what is Lex's journal. Her therapist has asked her to keep it so that she can explore her feelings about her life and where it might be headed. And while she doesn't want to make the journal solely about Tyler, he plays a huge part in her flashbacks because she comes to terms with a lot of the lasts they had together or that she remembers of him.

There's so much to say about this book and I could go on and on and bore you to tears, but I won't. For anyone who has ever been exposed to what suicide does to those who knew the victim, I implore you to jump into Hand's book and experience the power people have to touch our lives.

Hand has written a story about how we really need to cherish every moment with our loved ones because we never know when we might not have them anymore. It's about remembering the good times, the bad times, and the last times. But most of all, it's about finding a way to forgive yourself and move on without having to totally let go. Don't go into this story lightly, it will wrench at your heart. And the sadness can be a bit overpowering. But the experience is well worth the hurt.

Cynthia Hand is the New York Times bestselling author of the Unearthly series with HarperTeen: UNEARTHLY, HALLOWED, RADIANT (an enovella) and BOUNDLESS. Currently she lives in southern California with her husband and two small children. She teaches courses in creative writing at Pepperdine University.

ARC Review: Soulprint by Megan Miranda @MeganLMiranda @bloomsburykids

Soulprint photo 20642557_zpse55f23d8.jpgWith the science of soul-fingerprinting a reality, Alina Chase has spent her entire life imprisoned for the crimes her past-self committed. In an attempt to clear her name, Alina unintentionally trades one prison for another when she escapes, aided by a group of teens whose intentions and motivations are a mystery to her. As she gets to know one of the boys, sparks fly, and Alina believes she may finally be able to trust someone. But when she uncovers clues left behind from her past life that only she can decipher, secrets begin to unravel. Alina must figure out whether she’s more than the soul she inherited, or if she’s fated to repeat the past.

This compelling story will leave readers wondering if this fictional world could become a reality.

Title: Soulprint
Author: Megan Miranda
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Expected Publication Date: 2/3/2015

Brooke's Review:
I want to thank Bloomsbury for providing me with an early copy of this book through Net Galley to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

I have never read a Megan Miranda book before. I have heard good things about her writing, and I absolutely loved the concept of this book when I read the blurb. So I jumped in with both feet hoping it would meet my expectations and, in the end, I really enjoyed it!

Alina Chase is 17, and constantly running from her soul. You see, before she was born there was June. And when June died, Alina inherited her soul when she was born. Soul-printed as a baby and matched as June, the government has no intention of letting Alina run free to commit the same crimes June did when she was alive. Taken from her parents and placed in seclusion from the world, she lives isolated and alone, with only government agents surrounding her. She has everything she could ever need: food, a roof over her head, clothing, eduction. But what Alina really wants is to be able to live. And also to prove to the world that she is so much more than the image they have of June; that she is truly her own person.

Enter Cameron, Casey and Dom, teens hell bent on setting Alina free. They all have their own reasons for needing her, and not all of them have good intentions. I can say that I figured out part of the plot rather early on in the book and knew that there would certainly be betrayal at some point. With Alina on the run and not knowing who she can trust, she does make a few mistakes on her journey. But she ultimately learns from there, and in turn learns she is far more like June then she ever could imagine.

I really enjoyed Alina's character, though I found her to be a bit too easy around the rag tag group of teens who break her free. Growing up with no one to really call friend, I can see that she just wanted to have those bonds that other teens her age have. I like how her relationship with both Cameron and Casey progresses. How she slowly figures out what it means to trust and have friends and come to care about others (something she has never had the chance to do since being taken away from her parents).

I will say the first half of this book moved a bit slowly for me. There was quite a bit of Alina and the gang running away and hiding. And there were some parts I thought a bit unbelievable when the characters never actually got caught. But because I loved the idea of the plot, I pushed along, and I wasn't disappointed. There is a lot of action in the book, and just a bit of romance (not too much which was a nice change from many YA books I have read as of late). Miranda gives a lot of twists and turns, showing the true colors of all that surround Alina.

And the thing I think I loved the most about this plot was how it brings into question what makes a person tick. Is it nature or nurture. Do we perhaps inherit traits we may have had in a past life. Does our soul really make us who we are? Alina spends much time in the book trying to figure these things out. And the revelations she comes to will be both surprising and eye-opening.

In the theme of Sophie Jordan's Uninvited, Miranda calls into question the possibility of what could happen if we are to judge people by something as intangible as a soul. She weaves suspense and thrills into this intriguing and often heart pounding book. At times I was on the edge of my seat just knowing that things could not end up well. Miranda blends science and thrills in this high stakes game of learning who we really are and what price we may pay for what our souls have done in our past lives.

Megan Miranda is the author of FRACTURE, HYSTERIA, and VENGEANCE. She spends a great deal of time thinking about the "why" and "how" of things, which leads her to get carried away daydreaming about the "what-ifs." Megan has a degree in Biology from MIT and currently lives near Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband and two children.

Interview with Ice - Ice is in both Thunderstone and Heart of Ice so I thought I'd interview him.

B: Tell us a little bit about growing up.

Ice: As long as I can remember, it's always been just my mom and me. I was an infant when my dad took off. We live in a subdivision of small ranch-style homes on the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe's reservation. I'm half Ojibwe. When I was about ten or eleven, I was chosen to apprentice our tribe's medicine man. I've been home-schooled ever since, to make time for training.

B: How do you like being home-schooled?

Ice: It's okay, I get to go at my own pace, so I don't have those random periods of boredom. I'm actually now a year ahead of the kids I was in fourth grade with. Sometimes I feel a little isolated, but I played hockey in middle school and I play for the high school now, so I have some contact with other guys and hear about what's going on.

B: When you became an apprentice medicine man, did you ever think you'd be battling monsters?

Ice: Heck no! (laughs) I expected ceremonies, medicine, storytelling…much tamer stuff.

B: What's your favorite part about being a medicine man?

Ice: The stories. Our lore teaches so many life lessons. I think it's important to keep it alive.

B: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Ice: If the weather's good I like to get outside, go hiking—there are a ton of trails in the Chippewa Forest. Fishing, of course. Land of 10,000 lakes, right? When it's cold I like to play hockey or stay in and play video games, listen to music, or read.

B: How do you measure success?

Ice: By integrity. All the money or power in the world is meaningless if you haven't achieved it honorably.

B: What do you want to show the world?

Ice: That I've earned the right to be a medicine man. That I'm not my father.

B: Okay, just for fun, what's your favorite movie?

Ice: Shawshank Redemption

B: Book?

Ice: Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen. I did a report on it in middle school.

B: Ice cream?

Ice: Rocky Road

Sixteen-year-old Jack Ironwood knew exactly what he wanted. Until he got it.
Jack was content to stay unnoticed by pretty and popular track-star, Natalie Segetich, until her best friend Emma disappears. Pursued by the dark lord's henchmen and ghastly mutant creatures, Jack and Natalie struggle to come out ahead in a battle and barter for souls. In the end, Jack will have to decide his own fate, because nothing short of a deal with the devil will get all three of them out of hell alive.

Book Blast and Giveaway: Instinct (Halloway #0) by J.A. Belfield @BookarooJu

Blurb:
Werewolf Sean Holloway treats the village marketplace like a sexual buffet, though his charm does little to win over his latest entrée of choice. Whether because of Jem Stonehouse’s unique scent, her headstrong nonchalance, or the fact he is forbidden to see her by his pack’s rules, Sean wants her.
When Jem is nothing but flippant toward his advances, he pursues her with vigour, stealing moments alone with her without a libido-driven agenda.
The new and heady experience for him drives their relationship beyond romantic interest, and straight toward love.
That is, until Jem learns the truth about Sean’s heritage. Knowledge of the existence of werewolves leads to only one outcome: death.
In this prequel to Darkness & Light*, we are taken back in time, to the very beginning of Jem and Sean’s love-across-the-centuries relationship.
Did it end there? Or did Sean defy his own pack to save the woman he loves?
*Can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt:
The marketplace had to be the best venue to pick up females. At the age of twenty, I would have been happy to visit every day, but James would not permit me. As Alpha, his commands were followed without question, so my visits were limited to once a week. I had to admit, it worked out better that way.
From fruit to art, to lace, to the blacksmith’s stall, I walked. Paintings of marketplaces often depicted them as cheery, colourful, and bustling with activity. The latter conception may have been correct; although, they leaned more toward grey and dreary than bright, and the air often filled with yells of anger and bitterness, as opposed to joyful greetings.
At least there were the scents: hams and boars’ heads, fruits, wines, the steam of cooking soups, and, my most favourite of all, the freshness of ripe women. Lorna Rushford, Helena Longbarrow, Matilda Thornberry named only a few, each of those alone bringing with her a memory.
The females noticed me as much as I did them, even though my past catches never approached, never asked why I had not called to visit, or if I would tend them again. Of course, my refusal to conform to the current trends in attire ensured I stood out from the other males who bothered to arrive. Whereas the women’s glances would be appraising, perhaps even hopeful, the men’s glares offered nothing but scorn for my dark trousers tucked into knee-high leather boots, and for the shirts I never bothered to secure with their woven laces. Men had been hung for far less than inconsiderate fashion sense, yet I did not care. I was not like them and never pretended to be.
A whisper drifted across, as I meandered through the crowd: “’Tis Mr Holloway, Eleanor.”
With a tilt of my head, I spotted the speaker leaning into her sister, who fluttered her lashes in a clear attempt to catch my attention.
Eleanor had turned out to be a worthy virgin. The scent of her blood had driven me wild as I had plunged into her.
I smiled to myself as I turned away.
Farther along, pausing to sample the crisp apples, I caught Mrs Lawson’s scent. The older ladies may not have been as pure, but they could not be denied their eagerness to please. For that reason alone, they made for an entertaining afternoon.
My nose lifted to track her, and I found the woman beyond a table stacked high with fresh loaves, hidden behind her fan, which she waved with vigour. I recalled that her petticoat had held many layers, and the removal of them turned out to be almost as much fun as the act itself. I wondered how she had explained the damage to her pompous husband.
At a new aroma begging for notice, my step faltered as my nostrils flared.
Strong, yet understated, alluring and seductive, the unsullied flavour carried the exceptional deliciousness of womanly musk. Possessed by a need to find the source, I tilted my head and allowed my nose to lead.
It should have been difficult, impossible even, to locate such subtlety amongst the overpowering wafts of food and body odours, yet the strong pull beckoned to me, drawing me on.
Whispers continued, as I passed one stall after another, but they no longer held my interest. My mind seemed only able to focus on the unfamiliar scent. Although it intensified with each step, I half wished for a stronger breeze to invade the clear morning, to bring me a more wholesome dose and appease my sudden and unbidden greed.
My eyes shifted, as I moved, searching. I skimmed over those who held no appeal, the ones whose flavour had already been tasted, until, at the end of the row ahead, I spotted two young women.
From the angle of their positions, I doubted they could see me. The purchasing of herbs distracted the darker haired of the two. Animated, she possessed a flamboyance which showed in her movements, and in her pleasant tones, as she bartered with the stall owner.
I imagined she would get her own way with the price.
To her side stood a fairer female, with a quiet calm that showed in the relaxed set of her shoulders. Taking a step closer, I studied her.
Appearing younger, almost lacking in confidence, she was also somewhat taller and certainly far more beautiful. I did not recognise her, yet could not mistake her scent. I had been tracking it for the past five minutes.
Leaning across the jewellery on the stall beside me, I caught the proprietor’s attention. “Who is the girl?” I asked, pointing toward the one who held me so rapt.
“Regular of mine.” He nodded and smiled. “The Stonehouse sisters often purchase my quartz and amethyst.”
As he spoke their name in a conspicuous overtone, the females turned.
Blue eyes, as dark as sapphires, appraised me from beneath wisps of blonde, and a smile widened the girl’s lips, as my own mouth curved at the corners.
Beside her, the darker girl leaned into the fair tresses of her sister. “Sean Holloway is a ladies’ man and not to be trusted,” she hissed, her words carrying to me with ease, before she walked off. When her sister remained, gaze locked with mine, the seemingly older girl called out, “Come along, Jem. Mother is waiting.”
My eyebrow twitched upward. Jem?
With her attention tugged back toward her departing sibling, she dipped her head and followed behind.
Still, the essence her body had left in its wake lured me, and, unable to do otherwise, I trailed after her.

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.

Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.

With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

A COLD LEGACY excerpt
p.21-24

Montgomery stopped the horses outside a tavern. He came to the carriage door, opening it just a crack to keep the rain from drenching us. “I’m going to ask directions. We can’t be far now.”

We watched him saunter over the muddy street as though he didn’t even feel the bite of freezing rain. A face appeared in the tavern window. The door opened and he spoke to a woman in a wool dress for a few moments, then stomped back through the mud. “This village is called Quick,” he told us. “The manor’s only five miles from here.”

“Did you hear that?” Lucy murmured to Edward, still stroking his hair. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. Everything will be all right once we arrive.”

Montgomery’s eyes shifted to me. Neither of us wanted to remind Lucy that the prospect of Edward’s fever breaking—and the Beast’s reappearance—was almost more frightening than the fever itself. Delirious, he was less of a threat.

“Let’s go then,” I whispered to Montgomery. “And quickly.”

He closed the door and in another moment we were moving again, passing through the rest of Quick. Then all too soon the village was nothing but fading lights. The storm grew and the road became rougher, and all the while Edward’s eyes rolled back and forth beneath shuttered lids.

Thunder struck close by, and Lucy shrieked. Montgomery whipped the horses harder, pulling us along the uneven road impossibly fast, trying to outrun the storm. I twisted in the seat to look out the back window at the pelting rain. A stone fence ran alongside us.

“We must be getting close,” I said.

“Not soon enough,” Lucy breathed. “We’re going to crash if he keeps driving like this!”

The road widened, straightening, letting us travel even faster. Lightning struck close by, blinding me. The horses bolted. Lucy screamed and covered her eyes, but I couldn’t tear mine away. The lightning had struck an enormous oak tree, twisted from centuries of wind. The oak took flame, blazing despite the rain. A smoking gash ran down the trunk—the lightning’s death mark. I watched until the rain put out most of the flames, but it still smoldered, billowing hot ash into the night.

The horses pawed the earth, and I grabbed the window to steady myself. At this wild speed, just hitting a single rock at the wrong angle would send the carriage shattering to the ground. It was madness to go so fast. Couldn’t Montgomery calm the horses?

Just when I feared the carriage would careen out of control, it stopped short, throwing me against the opposite wall. I tangled in Lucy’s limbs as the chains around Edward’s body clinked. Balthazar grunted, jerking awake at last. We scrambled in the bottom of the carriage until the door flew open.
Montgomery stood in the pelting rain. I feared he’d say we’d broken another strut or the horses had gone lame or we’d have to spend the night in the harsh storm.

But then I saw the lights behind him, and the night took shape into a turreted stone manor with bright lamps blazing and gargoyles on the roof vomiting rain into a stone courtyard.

Montgomery’s eyes met mine beneath the low brim of his hat.

“We’ve arrived,” he said.

About Megan:

Hello!

I’ve been many things, like a professional exchange student, park ranger in Montana, and LOST enthusiast, but what I am now is a writer.

I think it’s fair to say I was born into it. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised behind the counter of my parents’ independent bookstore, Highland Books in Brevard. Ah, so many free books. But I never thought being a writer could be a real career. After college I thought I’d end up as a foreign service officer somewhere dashing and exotic, like Canada. I studied French, Spanish, German, and Russian and still speak a few of those. Then I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Senegal, where I learned a few more languages I’ll never speak again and lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water. You can probably imagine how that experience went, but if you’re curious, here are the dirty details

It wasn't until a chance aquaintance read something I wrote and said, "have you ever considered being a writer?" that something clicked and I realized it was possible. My husband encouraged me, and I quickly fell head-over-heels in love with writing and children's literature in particular. I started out writing articles, which have appeared in Faces, Appleseeds, and Calliope magazines, and stories for younger children. I soon realized I wasn’t sweet enough to write fiction for that age and found myself writing young adult literature instead, which doesn’t require nearly as many tender moments and includes a lot more cursing.

When I'm not writing, I can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. I love to hear from readers, so please drop me a line!

I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.
