Welcome Trisha! Take it away!
1Did you always know you wanted to
be a writer or did you want to be something else?
First, thanks
so much for having me! And hmm well, I think I pretty always knew I wanted to
be a writer. At least when I was old enough to really start considering a
career seriously. Back in middle school J
How long does it take you to write
a book from start to finish?
If I have a
good grasp on exactly how I want the story to go (I don’t plot), then two
months. I writer nearly every day, at least 2,000 words a day. If it’s a book
where I have to spend the majority of time researching, it could take over a
year. Just depends. It took a year and three months to write ASTARTE’S WRATH
with the amount of research that was needed.
How do you come up with themes for
your stories?
They really
just pop into my head. I have little control over my brain ha!
Do you have a schedule of when you
write?
Not really.
Before I started working full time outside of writing, I could write throughout
the day, whenever. Now, though, I try to write for at least two hours a day,
and edit for one. And that’s whenever I can work it into my day best.
How are you able to balance other
aspects of your life with your writing?
Good
question! I’m still working on that J I have to put family first, then my job that is not writing, and then
unfun stuff like cleaning, laundry, food
shopping…and then I can finally sit down to write.
shopping…and then I can finally sit down to write.
What elements do you think make a
great story line?
Characters
first. If you don’t feel connected to them in some way, whether you like them
or not, then the rest of the story probably doesn’t matter. Once you get a hold
of your characters and what drives them, I feel the rest falls into place.
What was the hardest thing about
writing a book?
For me, the
research. Even if I’m writing a Contemporary, research has to be done. To where
my characters are from, where they’re traveling to, their hobbies…I’m always
reading and learning about new things for my characters
How many books have you written so
far? Do you have a favorite?
Eight. Though
two of those will never see the light of day. They were my first two books, and
they were good practice. I don’t really have a favorite, because if I think
long on any one of them, I fall in love with the characters and story all over
again. I guess I tend to favor my newest at the moment just because I haven’t
had to edit it to death yet lol.
Do you have a favorite character?
I think I
relate more closely to Astarte.
Where do you write?
In bed.
When deciding on how to publish, what directed you to the route
you took?
Because I
grew up with traditionally published books, I first tried that. Just because it
was all I knew. But after discovering the freedom and how much better
self-publishing fit my schedule, I’ve chosen to continue publishing that way.
It just makes sense for me.
Have you gotten feedback from
family about your book(s)? What do they think?
My parents
are my biggest supporters other than my critique partners and readers. They
read all my books before they go to print, and they buy them all when they
release J My husband and teen son are supportive in
their own way, by leaving Mom alone when she needs to write, or going to the
grocery store when I’m stuck in a plot hole.
What kinds of things do you like to
do outside of writing?
There’s stuff
out there other than writing?
What kinds of advice would you give
to someone who wants to start writing?
Read, read,
read. Read some more, then read again. After that, read, and then write, read
and write. Repeat.
What is your favorite book?
favorite author? Do you have an author that inspired/inspires you to
write?
Anne Rice was
the author who inspired me to write when I was in middle school. Because of
that, I’ll always have a special place for Lestat and INTERVIEW WITH THE
VAMPIRE.
Do you have any go to people when
writing a book that help you with your story lines as well as editing, beta
reading and such?
I could not
put a single book out without my critique partner, Rachel Harris. She must sign
off on every sentence first. She’s my go-to gal.
Are you working on anything
now?
I am! I have
a few projects going on, and they’re all sequel to my current books out in the
market. There might be a Thriller in there somewhere within the next year.
