Blog Tour: Son of Set (Descendants of Isis #2) By Kelsey Ketch @kelseyketch

 photo Son-of-Setbanner_zpsde8a1e0c.jpg

photo SonSet_CVR_XSML_zps121ef8bf.jpg“. . . the Sons would never just let him go—alive.”

Seth O’Keefe has broken the laws of his god. He never thought he would sacrifice his own future to protect a Daughter of Isis. But when the Sons of Set discovered Natti is the Secret Keeper, he had no choice. Now, Seth and Natti are on the run from his father, who wants nothing more than to see Seth dead. With no allies, Seth turns to the Daughters of Isis for help, hoping they would protect Natti. But when they meet the Daughters, he discovers a secret that puts both their lives in more danger. Low on options, Seth sees only one possibility for survival. He must help Natti solve an ancient puzzle and find the secret name of Ra.

Natara “Natti” Stone is having a hard time swallowing the truth. She can’t believe what she has learned in the past twenty-four hours: Seth is a Son of Set blessed with charm; she is a Daughter of Isis blessed with a sliver of Ma ‘at; the locket her grandmother gave her holds an ancient Egyptian secret linking to Osiris and Isis. That along with being tortured and brutalized by the Sons of Set, she can hardly hold herself together. Thank God for Seth’s touch! That warm, tingling sensation that drowns it all out. Yet her heart struggles to stay focused. She must quickly embrace her destiny before the secret name of Ra falls into the wrong hands.

Character Profile:
Name: Natara “Natti” Stone
Age: 17
Hair Color: Blac k
Eye Color: Amethyst
Blessing: A Sliver of the feather of Ma ‘at (Truth)
Closest Friends: Wanda, Kevin, Jen
Boyfriend: Ah, sort of running for her life, right now. She’s not focused on a boyfriend.

Likes:
Tennis. There’s nothing like being out on the tennis court. The fast pace. The pounding of one’s heart. The tension. It’s an exhilarating experience. One that keeps Natti’s mind off her troubles, such as her mother’s and grandmother’s deaths.
Her family and friends. Natti hates that fact she’s been forced to leave them all behind, and possibly, in the hands of a crazed cult. But really, what choice did Seth have? He was trying to save her life. And if either she or Seth set foot in Setemple again, they both would be killed!
Puzzles and riddles. Natti has always been pretty good at piecing together clues—well, most of the time. It’s like she was born for it. And if she could just get Seth to translate the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs in her grandmother’s locket, maybe she could piece out where Ra’s secret name is located, before it’s too late.

Dislikes:
Sean O’Keefe and the Sons of Set. Seriously. They were the bastards that kidnapped, tortured, and nearly killed her! All because of a family secret Natti hardly knew anything about—which she kept trying to tell them, over and over again. It’s a bloody wonder she hadn’t gone mental from the experience.
Being on the run. It’s not like its one grand adventure or a fun, weekend road trip. She’s running for her life! Anyone, anywhere, could be assisting the Sons of Set with tracking them down. Worse, not even the Daughters of Isis can help them now. There are no allies in this game. There’s just her and Seth.
Secrets. At least if Seth lied to Natti, she could detect it. She could call him out and force him to confess the truth. But her heart has no way of telling the weight of a secret. She’s completely in the dark. And if the secret involves either her or Seth’s fate, she wants to know about it. He’s not alone in this fight. They’re in this together.

Quote: “No. I only thought you were a spoiled rotten rich kid whose only charm was his father’s money.” A malicious grin spread on her lips. “And I still stand by it.”

Talented photo 13466202_zps4b40f02c.jpgWhen Talia Lyons was just a child, her parents were murdered before her eyes. Offered a choice between accepting their fate and exacting revenge, Talia trains to become one of the country’s deadliest assassins in order to kill the man responsible for their deaths: Ian Crane. Luckily, Talia was born with a gift- the ability to read and influence the minds of others. At sixteen, Talia is poised to graduate from the McDonough School for the Talented, where she learned to control her abilities. Now there is only one obstacle standing between her and the retribution she craves... Talia herself.

Her greatest asset may also be her undoing; while a formidable weapon in the field, Talia’s talents prevent her from both shutting off the mental connection she shares with her questionable boyfriend and blocking out the thoughts of a beguiling fellow recruit. But Talia can’t afford to have the feelings and distractions of a normal teenage girl, when her life is far from normal.

She must regain the single-minded determination that has brought her this far, or it may cost Talia her life when she finally faces Crane. And even after being molded in to a weapon of war, she’ll still have to find the strength it takes to pull the trigger.

If James Bond and Sookie Stackhouse had a love child with a yearning for vengeance, her story would be TALENTED: an adventure about powerful teenagers who aren’t afraid to embrace their fears and fight for what they believe in.

ISIS' REVIEW:
I would like to thank NetGalley and Indie Inked for granting me the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Though I received the e-book for free that in no way influenced this review.

Talia is a captivating character, that superhero with the fatal flaw. Although in Talia's case she certainly doesn't see herself as anything resembling a superhero - but she sure sees the flaws. Having been molded by the top dog in the Agency since she was discovered to be the only survivor of her murdered family, Talia filled the gaping hole caused by losing her loving parents with the friendship of her rescuer's son. Donovan became Talia's world, filling the role of family, friend, and eventually boyfriend.

Donovan is also Talented, which means he has a special skill set that the average populace does not. Just as Talia does. There are all different types and strengths - people who can morph into an animal, or many, (some can even morph into other people), and the Brains - those who calculate raw data faster than a computer, or the Techs, who have a distinct affinity for technology. And of course there are those with powers like telekinesis, mind-reading, and even compulsion. There used to be more variety and greater strengths, but as time passed since the events that so altered the world, some of the more rare powers just disappeared from the gene pool.

Talia has spent her life training to become a Hunter, part of an elite squad that goes out to do recon and collect data, even going so far as to kill those on the other side. Hypothetically she knew she would be sent on Kill Missions, but reality is something else altogether.

For graduation Talia, like all Pledges, must complete a solo Mission. In her case they are sending her up against the head of the opposition to do some recon to try to identify some of their other top agents. She must get into Ian Crane's residence in Las Vegas. The reclusive leader of the Coalition never leaves his fortified compounds, just like Mac, and when either man travels they do so under heavy guard.

Things fall apart in the end of the Mission, and Crane surprises Talia, telling her things that simply can't be true. He is evil, of course he would tell her lies about her own parents. But there has always been a tiny seed of doubt buried in Talia's mind - will Crane's comments wake the slumbering doubts?

All this on the poor girl's plate, and that is without even getting into the boy problems she is having!

Author Interview Thursday with Giveaway: Welcome Jessica Brody @JessicaBrody

Welcome to Author Interview Thursday hosted by the Never Too Old for YA and NA Books group on Goodreads.

Today we welcome author Jessica Brody to the blog!
 photo 18806133_zps1bfea6a4.jpg photo 9791892_zps0795c058.jpg
 photo 9791902-1_zps6b963a63.jpg

Thanks so much for being here today, Jessica!
Take it away!

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or did you want to be something else?
The short answer is yes. Although it took me a long time to figure that out. In second grade I turned in a four page book report (the assignment was to write one paragraph) and the teacher made such a huge deal about it. I really couldn’t understand why. Writing just came naturally to me. At that moment I remember wanting to be a writer. But somewhere along the way I convinced myself that I needed to get a “serious” job…you know, one that comes with dental insurance. So I majored in Economics in college (very serious!) and went on to be a financial analyst for MGM Studios. It wasn’t until later that I realized “serious” wasn’t for me. So I quit to pick up where I left off at age seven.
How long does it take you to write a book from start to finish?
On average, it takes me about 3 months to write the first draft. Then my editor comes in and tells me how to fix it and I do another draft in a few weeks. Then they do what’s called a “line edit” which is when the editor goes line by line and fixes grammar and cuts out parts that aren’t needed, etc. That takes about another month. And then after that it’s the Copyediting phase where they make sure EVERYTHING is perfect. That takes another few weeks. So total, about 9-12 months before it’s perfect and ready to be printed.

How do you come up with themes for your stories?
I really love themes. If a theme is well hidden in a book or movie it becomes like a scavenger hunt for me. I become the Thematic Sherlock Holmes! For my own books, I start by asking the question, “What does this character have to learn from this plot?” In other words, why does this character HAVE to experience this story? The answer is usually the theme of the book. Like with one of my contemporary stories, MY LIFE UNDECIDED, the character had to learn how to make her own choices and deal with the consequences of them. So the theme became “It’s okay to make mistakes.”

Do you have a schedule of when you write?
I can only write for about 2-3 hours a day. For one, I get antsy and can’t still for much longer than that and I always seem to have so many other things to do. I’m a full time writer, but you’d be amazed at how much other work besides writing piles up. When you work for yourself you also end up being your own tech person, graphic designer, accountant, publicist, assistant, photocopier, filer, and online marketing specialist! I try to do all my writing in the morning. Like first thing after I wake up. If I don’t, it miraculously NEVER gets done!

How are you able to balance other aspects of your life with your writing?

What other aspects of my life? Haha! Seriously though, I don’t do much else. My career as a writer is my life. If I’m not working on a book, then I’m traveling to promote a previous book. On my rare down time I like to watch TV, read, travel for fun, and hang out with my doggies.

What elements do you think make a great story line?
For me, I think all great stories have some kind of “fish out of water” element. A character who is out of their comfort zone and trying something new. Trying new things and having new experiences are what force us to change as human beings. And great characters always have some changing/learning to do. Otherwise, why do we want to read about them!? So, on that note, another element that makes a great story is transformation.
What was the hardest thing about writing a book?
Act 2! Or the dreaded “middle.” Act 1 is my favorite. It’s the set-up. Everything is fresh, the character is new and fun and novel. You get to lay the groundwork for the story, build suspense, layer in complex plot points that will be resolved later. And then comes the Act 2. The heart of the story. Also known as “my nemesis.” The character is now totally grating my nerves, everything I set up in Act 1 absolutely sucks, I have no idea why I’m even a writer to begin with, I have the vocabulary of a five year old, all the “complex plot points” I thought I was setting up now actually have to be dealt with (yikes!) and I become nearly impossible to live with. And yet, somehow, incredibly, magically (as if little elves snuck in my house in the middle of the night and fixed everything that was wrong with my story), I finally arrive at act 3, the conclusion and then I’m like, “That wasn’t so bad. I don’t know why I was so freaked out!”

How many books have you written so far? Do you have a favorite?
I have written eleven full-length novels. Only eight have been contracted to be published. And of those, only seven are currently “out.” The last book in the Unremembered trilogy, UNCHANGED, will be released in February of 2015!
Favorite? That’s like asking a mother to pick her favorite child! They’re all my babies. My favorite character is Brooklyn Pierce from MY LIFE UNDECIDED. My favorite plot is 52 REASONS TO HATE MY FATHER. And the book I’m most proud of is UNCHANGED, the final book in the trilogy.
Do you have a favorite character?
See above!
Where do you write?
I used to only be able to write outside of my house. Like in coffee shops and things. Now I can pretty much write anywhere. And I have to because of all the travel I do.
When deciding on how to publish, what directed you to the route you took?
I took pretty much the most traditional route to becoming a traditionally published author. And that is, find an agent and have the agent sell your book. It was the only route I really knew of. Back then, when I first got published, self-publishing wasn’t really a thing yet. It was just starting out. It wasn’t as easy as accessible as it is now. I’m not sure if that would have changed my course. I really wanted to be published by a major publisher so that was the route I took! It took me five years to get there, but it was worth the struggle.
Have you gotten feedback from family about your book(s)? What do they think?
I think my biggest fan is my little sister. She loves the Unremembered trilogy. She gets to read all the books early. She just finished UNCHANGED and called me right away to squeal about the ending. The ending is a bit of a shocker.
What kinds of advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing?
Don’t be afraid to write badly. All writers have awful first drafts. That’s why they’re called first drafts. Sometimes you have to just get through the story before you can make it pretty. I think a lot of new authors quit halfway through the book because they’re afraid that it’s not good. The first draft won’t be good. Just finish it and fix it later. The hardest part about writing a book is getting to that last page.

What is your favorite book? favorite author? Do you have an author that inspired/inspires you to write?
My favorite book changes by the day! Right now it’s READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline. Gosh, I loved that book! Favorite authors include: Suzanne Collins, Sophie Kinsella, Jandy Nelson, Rainbow Rowell, and J.K. Rowling .
Do you have any go to people when writing a book that help you with your story lines as well as editing, beta reading and such?
My dad and my husband are my first readers. I’ve also collected a lot of “plot solvers” along the way. These are fellow authors who I call upon when I’m stuck on a plot problem.
Are you working on anything now?
YES! I’m working on a new contemporary standalone! Unfortunately I can’t tell you much else about it at this point, but it will be similar to my previous contemporaries. And after that, well, I have a ton of other fun ideas!
Thanks so much for being here today, Jessica! IT was so great to have you and an't wait to hear more about your newest book!

Jessica Brody photo 1164465-1_zps99753432.jpgJessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started self "publishing" her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples and electrical tape.

After graduating from Smith College in 2001 where she double majored in Economics and French and minored in Japanese, Jessica later went on to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development. In May of 2005, Jessica quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author.

In four short years, Jessica has sold nine novels (two adult novels to St. Martin's Press and seven young adult novels to Farrar, Straus, Giroux.) THE FIDELITY FILES, her debut, released in stores (in real binding) in June of 2008 and the the follow-up, LOVE UNDER COVER in November 2009. THE KARMA CLUB, Jessica's debut young adult novel released in April of 2010 and her second YA release, MY LIFE UNDECIDED just recently hit bookstores in June 2011.

52 REASONS TO HATE MY FATHER (which was recently optioned for film) will be out in Summer 2012 and UNREMEMBERED, (also optioned for film), the first book in a new teen sci-fi series, will be released in early 2013.

Jessica's books are published and translated in over twelve foreign countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Russia, Brazil, China, Portugal, Israel, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Jessica now works full time as a writer and producer. She currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Colorado.

Guest Review: Starstruck by Cyn Balog @cynbalog @randomhousekids

photo 9536657_zps889dd4ac.jpgGwendolyn "Dough" X doesn't think she has much going for her—she carries a few extra pounds, her family struggles with their small bakery in a town full of millionaires, and the other kids at her New Jersey high school don't seem to know that she exists. Thank the stars for her longtime boyfriend, Philip P. Wishman—or "Wish." He moved away to California three years ago, when they were 13, but then professed his love for her via e-mail, and he's been her long-distance BF ever since.
At the beginning of her junior year, though, Wish e-mails that he's moving back to Jersey. Great, right? Well, except that Dough has gained about 70 pounds since the last time Wish saw her, while Wish—according to his Facebook photos—has morphed into a blonde god. Convinced that she'll be headed for Dumpsville the minute Wish lays eyes on her, Dough delays their meeting as long as she possibly can.
But when she sees Wish at school, something amazing happens. He looks at Dough like she's just as gorgeous as he is. But Wish is acting a little weird, obsessed with the sun and freaked out by rain. And the creepy new guy working at the bakery, Christian, is convinced that there's more to Wish's good looks than just healthy eating and lots of sun. He tells Dough that a mark on Wish's neck marks him as a member of the Luminati—an ancient cult of astrologers who can manipulate the stars to improve their lives. Is Wish and Dough's love meant to be—or are they star-crossed?

Crystal's Review:

I've read Cyn Balog's Fairy Tale and Sleepless and knew that I would love Starstruck just as much. I was right; Balog never disappoints. Her originality, easy writing style, and the way she channels her characters so well makes her one of my absolute favorite YA authors.

Gwen, or "Dough", and Philip Wishman, or "Wish", have been more than just best friends since grade school and they remained that way even after Wish moved away from their small New Jersey island town to California three years earlier. Gwen comforted herself with doughnuts and pastries from her mother's small, struggling bakery. Wish became a bronze god. Now it's Junior year and he's moving back and is so excited to see her again. Gwen, sure that Wish will run away in disgust the moment he sees her, just wants to crawl into a jelly doughnut and die.

When Wish arrives at school it's worse than Gwen thought: as usual, she is completely invisible to everyone, while the entire school falls all over Wish, who is practically glowing with perfection. Imagine her surprise when he acts like everything is completely normal  - which completely baffles her. That's not the only odd thing about Wish and Gwen's not the only person to notice. The strange guy that her mom hired for summer help in the bakery thinks he knows exactly what Wish got himself into while in California, but it's too insane for Gwen to believe. But soon Gwen can no longer deny the signs, and the entire island might be at risk if she can't make Wish stop what he's doing. The price of perfection.

I felt that the climax was a little rushed and somewhat anti-climatic, but the ending was perfect.

Once again Balog impressed me with her ability to give a contemporary feel to a very original paranormal story. I loved it.

As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

photo 2995873-2_zpsa019019e.jpgJulie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.
When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job.
To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dogtrainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time.
Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyper-active Papillon.

Blog Tour: Almost Night by Emily White @Emily_T_White

ALMOST NIGHT by Emily White Release Date: May 5, 2013 Paperback, 303 pages Genre: YA / Fantasy / Fiction
Fourteen-year-old Lilly Grey exists in two worlds at the same time. She just doesn't know it.
As the only albino in a million mile radius, Lilly is used to being different. Pink eyes and white hair aren't exactly the best camouflage in the harrowing jungles formally known as high school. And yeah, she's used to being an outcast and seeing the world in a slightly different way, but she never guessed how literally "different" applied to her.
Not until a clan of shape-shifting dragons tell her she's not just albino. She's a unicorn and the only mortal alive who can live on both Earth and its antithesis, Morcah. Now all those times she thought she saw a floating brown blotch in the sky or eyes peering out at her from the bark of trees make sense. She's been seeing Morcah, a land that exists in the exact same spot as Earth, just in a different phase.
But it's not all sunshine and rainbows for this unicorn. As the only one who can live in both phases, she's also the only one who can bring Morcah--and all its inhabitants--to Earth. And creatures who've been trapped on Earth since the Dark Ages are willing to do worse things than kill to make that happen.
Again.

Welcome to The Cover Contessa, Emily!

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or did you want to be something else?
Oh, I definitely always wanted to be a writer, but there were plenty of other careers I thought I’d pursue as well. Paleontologist, lawyer, President of the U.S., empress of the universe. You know the usual.

How do you come up with themes for your stories?I usually see something while out and about, or while watching TV or reading a book. I’ll see an idea and think, “Yeah, that’s neat, but I wonder if...” and go from there.
Do you have a schedule of when you write? I TRY to write during my kids’ nap. This does not always happen. Sometimes it’s a very rough day and nap time is Netflix time for me.
How are you able to balance other aspects of your life with your writing? Through constant stress and the aid of alcohol. LOL! No, but really. Stress. Lots of it. And a feeling that I’m never getting anything accomplished. And for a lot of things that’s true. I can’t get EVERYTHING done, so my house is sometimes a bit messy and my wardrobe remains in the jammie category.
What was the hardest thing about writing a book? Reading it after the first draft and not immediately throwing it in the garbage. I think it’s hard to write something that you poured countless hours into only to realize it’s so far from being done that the end of the road is almost completely out of sight. It’s very discouraging. Especially when you have a tendency, like I do, to read while you write. You see these great examples of art and you have to convince yourself not to give up quite yet on your trash. And maybe the hardest part is convincing yourself that those great examples were just as bad as first drafts, too.
How many books have you written so far? Do you have a favorite? I have written four books so far! I’d have to say my favorite is always the one I just finished. So Almost Night is at the top of the list right now, but ask me in a few months and I’ll tell you that my favorite is Destructor, the final book in my space opera series.
Do you have a favorite character? I love Nat from Almost Night. I love her so much. I love her bright red hair, her blasé attitude, her inability to control what comes out of her mouth. I love it all.
What kinds of things do you like to do outside of writing? I love to draw, go hiking in the woods, and play British by attempting afternoon tea. Pretty much anything that’s quiet and outside.
What kinds of advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing? Write; surround yourself with other writers, read widely, and experiment.

Are you working on anything now? I’m working on three projects right now, actually! Destructor (book #3 of The Auri Wars), #2 of Tales of Morcah (title to be revealed on the fb tour page on May 30th), and a super-secret project I’m doing with another amazing writer. Be sure to friend me on Facebook because I tend to post sneak peeks and other goodies. :)
Thanks so much for being here Emily. It was great to have you!

She prefers her men fully clothed and donning bow-ties, her commas British, her books cheesy with big, overly-dramatic explosions, her characters awkward and endearingly real,* and watching her movies in authentic turn-of-the-century theaters. When not exposing her nerdy self to the world, she's creating her own friends and putting them in horrible, yet sometimes humorous situations.
Check out her YA Space Opera series starting with Elemental (Spencer Hill Press, 2012), continuing with FAE (February 2014), and ending sometime in the near future with a book she has yet to write. She's also authored a collection of Steampunk (zombie, werebot romance) flash fiction, if you're into those kinds of things, titled "To Love or Die in a Steamy-Reamy World."
