The Cover Contessa's Review:
I want to thank Harlequin Teen for asking me to read and review some of their first digital only galley's! What an honor! When I was contacted and given the blurb for this series, there was no way I could not review. I love anything that is Xmen like and this one certainly fits that bill: kids and adults with special powers? YUP! Right up my ally for sure! Receiving these books for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.
This book has the perfect blend of romance and sci-fi for me! First off, almost all the characters have some kind of ability: moving things with their minds, being able to track people just from having touched them once, being able to manipulate people's organs. WOW! Not only did the book start off with a bang, it just kept running! Danger was possible at every turn, and my heart was often in my throat as I wondered how things would work out, how people would get away!
Tessa Carson (aka Sarah Spencer) is an interesting character. She has many secrets she has to keep but yearns to be just a normal girl, with a normal family. She wishes she could stay put and not have to ever move again. Poor girl had it so rough, she thought people were going to turn on her around every corner and felt like there was no one she could trust. And not being able to tell anyone about her past was just eating away at her insides. And then she meets Tristan Walker....
Tristan is an immediately likable character. He takes an instant liking to Tessa and you can feel their attraction. And no matter how much Tessa tries to stay away from him, she keeps bumping into him around every corner. He pays attention to her and of course he's totally swoon worthy. And Tessa just wants to be normal, after all, so liking a boy and dating is something high on her list. However, there's something about him from the start that I can't put my finger on. Something that is not right and Tessa's trust in him makes me nervous.
I like how Kensie kind of puts a witness protection program spin type thing on this book. The family on the run, constantly moving from town to town whenever the bad guys get close. Trying their hardest to hide from the bad guy, but never quite succeeding. I spent much of this first part of the book expecting the bad guy to jump out at any moment. The suspense was definitely there in every chapter. And Kensie leaves small clues throughout this first part that shows perhaps the family is not as safe as they think they are.
Kensie also has a great way with her writing. The pacing is perfect and there's not a huge amount of info dump. She plays her characters off each other well and I can really picture them all, despite only being in Tessa's head.
I'm exciting for the next installment!

Part Two in the riveting romantic thriller about a family on the run from a deadly past and a first love that will transcend secrets, lies and danger…
Tessa Carson has unlocked her heart and her secrets to Tristan Walker—but Tristan has secrets of his own, and his might just mean the end of Tessa’s family. Unaware, Tessa embraces falling in love and being herself for the first time since she was attacked when she was only eight years old. But secrets can’t be run from forever, and sometimes love is too good to be true…Once again a huge thanks to Harlequin Teen for providing me with an eARC of the second installment in this series. I was anxious to get on with things and see where they would go! Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.
The Cover Contessa's Review:
Part two of this series picks up right where the first part left off. Tessa and Tristan are now dating and she's enjoying being a normal girl. And she starts trusting Tristan more and more. So she has trusted him with her secret, the one she has never told anyone else. She just can't help herself. And when she does, it's like a huge weight has been lifted from her shoulders. But when her parents finally meet Tristan, Tessa's father can't read him, they are immediately skeptical and want her to stay away from him. But Tessa will have none of it.
Part 2 of this series certainly has many elements to make it a run away hit: action, romance, danger. It's a heady mix that keeps you reading. And of course we finally see some betrayal, which, while I was acutely aware something like it would have happened, I wasn't 100% sure so it still kind of surprised me! Tristan has as secret and that secret is bound to rip Tessa's world apart and tilt it upside-down on it's axis!
This part of the series has me totally questioning who you can and cannot trust. Who is good and who is bad, and will Tessa ever feel safe? Again, Kensie's pacing is spot on, mixing and matching all the elements that make a book intriguing. And the plot continues to thicken and twist and turn.
I'm excited to see what the third installment brings for sure, especially this one ended on a cliff hanger!
Blurb from Goodreads:
Part Three in the riveting romantic thriller about a family on the run from a deadly past and a first love that will transcend secrets, lies and danger…
Betrayed, heartbroken, and determined to save her family, Tessa Carson refuses to give in to Tristan Walker’s pleas for forgiveness. But her own awakening psychic gift won’t let her rest until she uncovers the truth about her family and her past. And Tristan is the only one who can help her sift through the secrets to find the truth hidden in all the lies…I continue to thank Harlequin Teen for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. I was anxious to get on with the story as the last installment ended on a cliff hanger. So I needed to know what happened! Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.
The Cover Contessa's Review:
Once again, this book picks up immediately where the last part left off. Tessa has been deeply betrayed and she no longer knows who she can trust. Her family has been ripped away from her and her only aim is to get them back and run from the people she believes are out to hurt her!
I can honestly say that I was annoyed with Tessa in this book. While I've liked her character in the past, I felt like she was more wishy washy here. I understand she is torn in what to believe, but I didn't feel like the portrayal of this was realistic. One second she's upset with Tristan the next she's letting him touch her. It just seems so at odds. However, I do understand that Tessa has never really been able to trust anyone, so it was like her brain was at war with herself!
And Tristan sticks by Tessa's side, no matter what. He truly believes in their love and wants her to trust him. I would be interested to see some of this story from his point of view.
What I loved most about this part of the series is it makes you question everything you have learned so far in the series. You are torn on who to believe and who is lying. Tessa's world is turned upside-down as Tristan drops a huge bomb on her. But she doesn't believe him and is determined to get to the truth, even if she has to use Tristan's love for her to her advantage.
While this was no my favorite installment of this sires, a little too much angst on Tessa's part (even though I know the whole truth was very hard for her to swallow), it still makes me want to continue with this series. I need to know what happens after Tessa accepts the truth and finds out who she can truly trust. And I need to know what happened to some of the characters that were put on the back burner!
So bring on more Kensie, because I am definitely a fan of this series!
Clara Kensie grew up near Chicago, reading every book she could find and using her diary to write stories about a girl with psychic powers who solved mysteries. She purposely did not hide her diary, hoping someone would read it and assume she was writing about herself. Since then, she’s swapped her diary for a computer and admits her characters are fictional, but otherwise she hasn’t changed one bit.
