*SPOILER ALERT* If you have not read the first book in this series, you might want to turn back and read it before you go on with this review. I promise it will spoil the first book. However, I will try my hardest not to spoil this book itself.
First I have to once again, as I did with the first book in this series, rave about the covers. I just love the, both the print one and the ebook version. They are fantastic. The colors are phenomenal and I love how the main character is portrayed. Although,I am surprised with how different she looks on the two covers.
I was pretty much chomping at the bit from the moment I finished book one to have book two. I actually kept bugging Ednah about it because I just needed to know what happened!
This book picks up right where the first book leaves off. Book one left me wondering how on earth things would work out! Raine and Torin are living next door to each other, but he has no recollection of who she is, and you can tell that this frustrates her beyond belief. I can feel her angst and annoyance at how much she wants him to remember. I can also tell that she will stop at nothing to get him back to where they were before the Norns took his memories. She has a plan and she will stop at nothing to carry it out: she is determined to make him fall for her all over again. Does it work, well, I'm not sure I should say since that seems to be a big part of the first half of the book.
Torin, despite the loss of his memories, remains the same cocky guy we knew and grew to love in Runes. He comes back a star athlete, the quarterback no less. But you can tell that he has this pull to Raine that he just doesn't understand. And you know that he has some recognition of what they once had, but he just can't put his finger on it. It's great to watch him struggle. I like seeing him where he's not sure how to act, and watching him kind of squirm because he feels off. Fun!
Now, believe it or not, I grew to really love Andris in this book. He totally bothered me in the first book and I did not trust him one bit. But this book gives you a totally different perspective on Andris and his motivations. He's really not the guy you were lead to believe he is. On top of that, he's really quite funny and just a bit cocky with an edge. It's great to watch him interact with Raine. He grows to care for her quite a bit, like a brother. More importantly, he's watching out for her best interests and Torin's. He is family to the core.
Eirick, well, he's a huge part of this book. Things really center around him and some changes he begins to go through. And the book focuses on who is trying to change him and why. It's a surprise when it comes down to it (although I can say I had my suspicions). At the same time, Eirik remains that goofy guy you grew to love in the first book and you cringe watching him struggle.
Someone new we meet is Lavania. I'll be honest and say I just don't like her. She's such a stickler for what she thinks is in the best interest for others. And she also has her thoughts on who is bad and who is good, and she stubborn about things and doesn't want to change her mind. Perhaps it's because I didn't really get to know her well that I just don't feel I can trust her. She definitely exudes that parental control (and not surprising since she is the who made Torin). I guess I'll see how I feel about her if she appears in the final book.
Ednah's writing is once again smooth and flows easily. I love her descriptions. She weaves an interesting story, a plot that keeps you guessing for the entire time. I didn't know what would happen or how. She has lots of action scenes, which move you through the story, as well as some great romance. And Walters takes the story to the next level of complexity, engaging many more characters and immersing us in more of the Norse world. She takes the story to a new depth that will keep you interested and guessing until the final pages.
I will say that the only thing that bothered me was how much Raine was determined to win Torin back. Don't get me wrong, I understand she loves him and wants him to know who she is, but she does mention quite a few times how much she loves him when I think we really already understood this.
I loved this book, although not as much as the first one and I think it's because I wanted to see a bit more development of Torin and Raine, of their struggle and their conflict. I almost feel it would have been nice to see a bit of Torin's point of view. However, this did not take away from my enjoyment of the book (or the series as a whole) and I am truly looking forward to seeing where Ednah takes the next book in the trilogy!
