Author Beth Revis wanted to know. And I'm gonna tell her!
So, when this question was posed to me, you can imagine that I was not even sure where to start. I love to read, so that's the first reason why I like YA. I mean, anyone who doesn't like to read wouldn't like any genre, yes? Then I kept thinking about how YA makes me feel. Well, being 41, I have to say, it makes me feel YOUNG! I mean, I know I'm not old and all, but I graduated from high-school MANY years ago. My experiences were never like those I read in YA, but then again, I'm not sure you see many teenagers who will tell you they are! But I like that YA takes you away into fantasy high-school/teen settings. The characters are often smart and witty with just enough teen angst to make you empathize just a bit with them. I pretty much read any sub-genre of YA, but my favorite are certainly the paranormal reads. I love that authors can shape what we know only as "fairy tale creatures" into real "people." They become tangible and we can picture exactly what they look like, how they act. And the authors make this genre easy to read. I know, it's for a younger generation, certainly, but with this genre I don't need to get bogged down in so many specifics that I can't keep my head straight! And usually with YA the characters show so much development from the beginning of the story to the end, it just keeps you reading. You watch them grown and learn, make mistakes and do things right. It's such a great mix. Finally, reading is my escape. I want to just read and not have to think too much. The YA genre provides that escape for me.
