It's that time again: Feature Friday!
Today I'm excited to have Jennifer Hubbard joining us here on The Cover Contessa. Jennifer is an author, but she's also a blogger.
I was lucky enough to get to meet Jennifer in person back in August at YA Fest 2012:
And I was fortunate enough to win a copy of her book The Secret Life!!!
So let's hear what she has to say about blogging, reading and life in general, shall we?
Where were you born and where do you call home?
I live in southeastern Pennsylvania.
How long have you been a blogger?
Five years.
What is the name of the book you most recently blogged about?
I had a guest post on The Catcher in the Rye, by Mindi Scott, the author of Freefall and Live Through This. Before that, I talked about Neal Shusterman’s Unwind and UnWholly.
Did you like the cover? Rate it on a scale of 1 stars to 5 stars, 5 being the best?
I don’t use star-system ratings, but I do like the covers of the books I mentioned. I really like the simplicity of Freefall’s cover.
Can you name a favorite scene from the book?
Let’s take Unwind for this one—the most memorable scene is of the unwinding. I wouldn’t say I “liked” the scene because it’s scary, but I admired it, and thought it was right and necessary for the book; unforgettable and very well-done.
What character did you like the most? The least? Why?
Connor and Risa were my favorite characters in the book. Risa was very level-headed. Connor changed the most; he grew up. He went from impulsive to responsible.
Was this a series or stand alone? If it is a series, will you read the rest of the books?
That’s what my blog post was about—Unwind was originally a stand-alone, but it has now become a trilogy. I probably will read the others.
Was this a review book or something you picked out to read? Do you think that influenced your review? What did you rate this book?
I don’t review books; I only write recommendations if there’s a book I like or want to discuss. But I highly recommend Unwind.
Have you written a book yourself or are you planning to in the future?
Yes to both. I’ve had two novels published so far: The Secret Year and Try Not to Breathe.
What genre is your favorite and why?
YA, contemporary, realistic. I like seeing characters deal with the kinds of problems I’ve faced in life.
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet? Is there an author that you really wanted to meet and had the pleasure of doing so?
I’ve been lucky to meet many wonderful authors, mostly at events in New York (many of them organized by David Levithan) and Philadelphia, but also at bookstores and festivals in New Jersey, New England, and DC.
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
Paperback, though I like hardcovers for their durability. I still haven’t formed an ebook habit yet.
Where do you buy your books?
Everywhere! Independent bookstores wherever I can, but also in chain stores, online, at book fairs, at library sales, etc.
Have you ever read a book more than once? Which one and why?
All the time. It’s normal for me to reread the books I own.
Do you prefer movies over books ever?
Rarely. I can’t think of an example off the top of my head.
What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?
Mary McCarthy’s The Group, in paperback.
Mary McCarthy’s The Group, in paperback.
What book are you about to start reading?
After this I hope to go on to Nova Ren Suma’s 17 & Gone (I managed to get my hands on an ARC!)
What book do you know that you will never read? Why?
It’s hard to say, because we grow and change, and sometimes we read books for research, so ... you never know.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest recently and why?
I liked Kirsten Hubbard’s (no relation to me) Wanderlove, because of the travel aspect, which you don’t see that much in contemporary books. Also Alissa Grosso’s Popular, because it was a psychological thriller with an unexpected twist.
Do you like book trailers? Why or why not?
I haven’t really gotten into them, but I’m more a text than a video person in general.
Name your three favorite book covers:
There are so many good covers; I’ll just name a few. Hush, Hush; Twenty Boy Summer; Moonglass; Rival; Imaginary Girls; Sweethearts; Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You; Thaw; But I Love Him.
Where do you usually blog?
My regular blogs are mirrored on Blogger and LiveJournal and feed to my Goodreads and Amazon author page. I also make appearances on YA Outside the Lines and Boylit.com.

How often do you blog?
Every other day on my own blog; about once a month at my group blogs.
How many books do you read in a month?
How many books do you read in a month?
About 7-10.
Do you have a reading log for your books? Do you have a goal for the year?
Not usually. But recently I’ve started tracking my purchases and my reading of new and old books, to try to make my TBR pile more manageable.
I have made a Goodreads shelf of some contemporary YA novels I really liked:
How do you organize your books?
YA and children’s fiction is in one bookcase; adult fiction in another; humor, memoirs, essays and writing books in another; magazines, hardcover adult fiction, poetry and short stories in another; all other nonfiction in the last bookcase.
What is your favorite color?
Blue
What is your most favorite electronic gadget?
I really don’t like electronic gadgets much, but my good old computer is indispensable.
What is your favorite food to eat?
Dungeness crab. Or chocolate.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint chocolate chip.
What is your favorite TV show? Movie?
The Daily Show. Movie: maybe Crimes and Misdemeanors.

What are you most fearful of?
Pretty much anything that gets covered on the news.
